LAKES AND LAGOONS

LAKES AND LAGOONS

The lakes and lagoons of the Amazon are of fluvial origin from the courses of the rivers whose paths have varied over time. These rivers change their meandering path, leaving crescent shaped river bends of stagnant water cut off, giving shape to the half-moon oxbow lagoons of the lowland rainforest.

These lagoons are locally called (cochas or tipicas ) and are haven to a variety of fish species that normally migrate against the current towards the rivers of the highland rainforest.

The most important Amazonian lake is the Rimachi and it is found to the right of the Pastaza River, 50 km from the mouth of the River Marañon in the region of Loreto.

The Sauce Lake is known as the most important lake of the highland rainforest, located in the district of the same name in the province of San Martin (close to Tarapoto) in the region also called San Martin, 5 km to the right of the River Huallaga. At 650 This

lake found in a tectonic depression surrounded by mountains with an altitude of over 900 metres.
