Sacred Valley – Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu :

Ollantaytambo (8,800 feet – 2,675 m.s.n.m.), the oldest continuously occupied settlement in America, shows the skill of the Incas in planning their cities. The spectacular steep terraces that protect the complex are one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle. The temple area, located at the top of the terraces, was vital to provide excellent defense.

The stones used in the construction of the fort were brought from a nearby quarry, located on the slopes of the mountains on the opposite side of the river-an incredible feat that required the effort of thousands of workers. The resort was still under construction at the time of the conquest and was never completed.

CATCCO recommended to visit the Museum and Cultural Center of Ollantaytambo located near the entrance to the fortress of Ollantaytambo, which promotes traditional culture and within their district technology. The museum has a shop displaying textiles and ceramics from the surrounding communities.

Machu Picchu The Incas: Origin Myths – Cusco Peru:

The legend of Manco Capac and Mama Odio, the children of the sun, recorded by the mixed race chronicler Garcilaso de a Vega, maintains that the royal couple emerged from the waters of Lake Titicaca and began their quest for a fertile territory where they could establish their lineage. Their search took them to the hill of Huanacauri, in the vicinity of Cusco, where the tupa yauri, or staff, caried by Manco Capac was driven deep into the soil, demonstrating that the land was fertile. According to the story, the couple settled in this territory and initiated the “civilizing” process among the neighboring tribes that would set the stage for the ruling lineage of the Incas. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

Another myth was recorded by chroniclers including Betanzos, Sarmiento de Gamboa and Guamán Poma, and it tells of how from one of.three caves or Windows -known as Pacaritambo- in Tambutocco hill, located very near to modern Cusco, three brothers emerged. Ayar Uchú, Ayar Cachi, Ayar Manco and Ayar Auca were accompanied by their respective sister brides: Mama Odio, Mama Huaco, Mama Ipacura and Mama Raua. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

Their search for a good territory in which to settle ended when Ayar Manco plunged the staff he was carrying into the earth, thereby indicating that they had found a land where they could live and establish the imperial lineage. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

That place was Cusco, the future center of the empire of the four suyus. in the interim, on the orders of his father, the sun, Ayar Manco changed his ñame to Manco Capac. He also married Mama Odio, and together they established the imperial lineage from which all the Incas recorded by history were descended. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

  • Plan showing the two sectors of the Inca city of Cusco: Hurin and Hanan. Note the recumbent puma form (Redrawn by Gasparini and Margolies, 1977:48).  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
  • Detail of a 19th century oil painting with a portrait of the first Inca, Manco Capac.  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
  • Portrait of Mama Odio, forming part of the genealogy of the Incas. 19th century.  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

The Plaza de Armas Cusco:

This ¡s the main public space of urban Cusco. The plaza was built during the Inca period as a place for gatherings and the celebration of important events and ceremonies. Originally, it was divided into two plazas by the channeled course of the Saphy River. For this reason, the main square -which today forms the center of Cusco- was known as Haucaypata (“place of tears”), while the smaller plaza was named Cusipata (it is still known today as Plaza del Regocijo, or “Plaza of Joy”).  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

This spatial organization expresses the classit Andean subdivisión of Manan (upper) and Hurin (lower), the concepts that formed the basis for the relationships of reciprocity and redistribution which sanctified political and economic activities. At the same time, these spaces validated the hegemony of one group (Hanan) over another (Hurin), thereby maintaining social equilibrium through ritual mechanisms which offset the asymmetrical reiations between these groups. We know that Haucaypata was covered with sand from the sea, as an everlasting homage to the source of all water and the worship of fertility, and that it was surrounded by the main residences of Inca Pachacutec, Huayna Capac, Huáscar and Inca Viracocha.  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

  • View of Cusco’s Plaza de Armas seen from San Cristóbal. During the Inca perlod it was known as Haucaypata and the main Inca palaces and other important buildings surrounded it. Major ceremonies took place here.  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
  • The Cusco´s Plaza de Armas is surrounded by wooden balconies. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
  • Nocturnal view of the cathedral and the ornamental fountaln, whlch dates from the second half of the 19th century. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
  • Cupola of the Jesuit church with its glazed tiles. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

The Jesuit Church of La Compañía – Cusco – Peru:

Together with the cathedral, this structure forms part of an unusual sight among the Spanish cities of Perú, for there are two churches in the main square of Cusco. This reflects the ¡mportance of the Jesuit order in the local ecclesiastical hierarchy. Built over the Amarucancha, it was completed in 1668 and is remarkable for its elegant fapade, the narrowness of which contrasts with the great height of the building. This effect is accentuated by the two elegant towers, the round openings of which reveal the enormous bells.  (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

The beautiful gilded baroque altar is more than twenty meters high, and its central image is dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).

  • Main altar table of the Jesuit church of La Compañía, by Diego Martínez de Oviedo. It was carved from wood and coated in gold leaf. (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
  • Detail of the capital of one of the columns supporting the church’s cupola (travel Machu Picchu Peru).
